Finding my Y @ the YWCA!
I have recently been selected as the 2017/18 board intern for the Queensland branch of YWCA. The YWCA is dedicated to eliminating racism, empowering women and promoting peace, justice, freedom and dignity for all. Founded in 1858 (yes 1858, a time where women may not have ever thought they could have equal rights or feel empowered)…they have gone from strength to strength to now being at the forefront of what I consider an absolute critical movement for women globally.
Some of the programs that I am excited to learn more about is the ‘Every Girl’ program. I think we cannot do enough to support our young generation develop leadership, confidence and self-awareness skills. Further to this, the Y Bloom program starts to develop our teenage girls to build resilience and confidence to be great leaders. For me, those programs will help shape the future for female leaders and I am excited to get involved!
As a board intern, I don’t quite know what to expect as yet, however thought I would share the things I am hoping to learn or reflect on in the next twelve months in this leadership capacity.
1.Patience. Patience grasshopper should become my mantra. All members will be passionate about the causes and listening to everyone, taking it all in and having patience in brilliant conversation will be key for me.
2.Enrichment. I could not think of a company who supports women’s causes like YWCA. I think it will enrich my day to day life knowing I am working with a great cause and supporting so many in need.
3.Circle. I believe my sphere of influence or my circle will grow, adapt and blossom. I cannot wait!
4.Time. I already at times struggle to manage my little world, and I believe this is a great opportunity to refine my time management and stress management to be an effective contributor at my job, Women in Safety and the Internship.
5.Brain. I am hoping to stretch my intellectual and emotional muscles. Board Governance is kicking off soon, so no doubt the stretch will start.
6.Coaching and Mentoring. This is a great opportunity to find a project, have coaching and mentoring and deliver for the YWCA.
7.Enjoy. If nothing else – enjoy the opportunity, the engagement and meeting fantastic like minded people!
